Russia Is Trying To Putin End To Gay Rights

Russia’s current president, Vladimir V. Putin, is outlawing homosexuality. So far the Russian people have been silent; but now, the world is taking notice.

In early July, a mere six months before Russia tentatively hosts the 2014 Winter Games, President Putin signed a law instructing police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals suspected of being homosexual, lesbian or “pro-gay”. After arrest, the legal system could hold detainees for up to 14 days in jail. Contrary to what the International Olympic Committee says, that law could mean that any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan that is gay (or even suspected of being gay) could be thrown in jail.

This law is not Putin’s only heinous act; this past June, President Putin signed another anti homosexuality bill categorizing “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. In other words: any teacher who tells students that homosexuality is not immoral, any parents who tell their child that homosexuality is normal, or anyone who even makes pro-gay statements to someone under legal age is now subject to being fined arrested.

If that isn’t unbelievable enough, President Putin is allegedly about to sign an edict that will remove children from their own families if their parents are gay, lesbian, or suspected of being gay or lesbian. Russian police would have the authority to remove children from adoptive homes as well as from their own biological parents. This seems reminiscent of past inhuman dictators like Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin, and is truly saddening on so many levels!
With rumors surfacing, Russian gay and lesbian families are already relocating from their homes in Russia in order to keep their families and lifestyle in tact.
America is wondering: why is President Putin so determined to outlaw homosexuality? President Putin defended his recent decisions by stating that “the Russian birthrate is diminishing and that Russian families as a whole are in danger of decline.” This sounds frighteningly Hitler-esq.

President Putin also stated that his adoption ban was enacted to protect children from pedophiles; this law wrongly categorizes all homosexuals as pedophiles.

President Putin’s campaign against lesbian, gay and bisexual people is a strategy taken straight from the Nazi playbook: alienating a minority. How can we allow this war against human rights to continue?? We must enact change. With Russia about to hold the Winter Games in Sochi, American and world leaders are in a position to speak out against President Putin’s attacks on gay rights.

World leaders need to unite via The Olympic Committee and demand the abolishment of these laws. We cannot let this intolerance continue.

In 1936 the world attended the Olympics in Germany; few participants said a word about Hitler’s campaign against the Jews. Looking back, we gape at the inconceivable torment and anguish that the Jewish community endured during Hitler’s regime, and wonder why so many went along with his perverse plan.
Let’s have the foresight to put an end to this madness before we regret our ignorance.
